Peter Dedon, an MIT professor of organic engineering, has been elected a fellow of the American Affiliation for the Development of Science (AAAS).
The 2022 class of AAAS Fellows contains 506 scientists, engineers, and innovators spanning 24 scientific disciplines who’re being acknowledged for his or her scientifically and socially distinguished achievements.
Dedon is the Singapore Professor within the Division of Organic Engineering, a lead principal investigator of the Antimicrobial Resistance Interdisciplinary Analysis Group on the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Analysis and Expertise (SMART), a member of the Heart for Environmental Well being Sciences, and a member of the HMS Initiative for RNA Medication.
His analysis program applies chemical approaches to understanding nucleic acid biology in human illness. His analysis teams at MIT and in Singapore are leveraging discoveries within the areas of epigenetics, epitranscriptomics, and genetic toxicology to develop new enzymatic instruments for biotechnology, new strategies for industrial microbiology and protein manufacturing, and novel therapeutics in screening- and structure-based drug discovery applications. Dedon and his former college students and postdocs have translated their science and applied sciences in a number of startup firms.
Dedon earned a BA in chemistry from St. Olaf Faculty in 1979 and an MD and PhD in pharmacology from the College of Rochester in 1987. He pursued postdoctoral analysis on the College of Rochester and Harvard Medical College, and joined the MIT school in 1991. Dedon helped create the Division of Organic Engineering in 1998.
