Lucas Hernandez to miss rest of World Cup

Lucas Hernandez has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2022 World Cup after picking up an injury against Australia.

Hernandez got the nod over his brother, Theo, for France’s first match of the tournament, but it wasn’t long before he was replaced by him.

Just nine minutes in, the Bayern Munich player went down clutching his knee after being beaten by Matthew Leckie, who then crossed for teammate Craig Goodwin to open the scoring.

It was immediately clear that the injury was serious, with the left-back unable to walk off the pitch without the support of the physios, and it’s now been confirmed that he’ll miss the rest of the World Cup.

He has suffered a ruptured ACL, becoming the fourth player to drop out of Didier Deschamps’ original squad along with Presnel Kimpembe, Christopher Nkunku and Karim Benzema.

“I know him well, courage, he will have it, that’s for sure. On behalf of the group, I wish him the best possible recovery.”

Asides from that injury, it was a positive night for France with the reigning champions ultimately cruising to an impressive 4-1 victory.

What’s more, Denmark could only draw 0-0 with Tunisia, making Kylian Mbappe and co favourites to top the group.
